Staying active is an excellent way to promote good health and meet others in your community as well. With May being National Physical Fitness and Sports month, now marks a great time to find ways to exercise more. Here are some suggestions to help you do just that:

Join an Adult Sports Team

There are many ways you can do this. Some companies sponsor adult softball teams. And if your work doesn’t do so, you can contact your local parks department. Often, they’ll hold adult sports leagues such as soccer, softball, and flag football. They can guide you on how to form your team and sign up. They can also help you find a team. It’s important to note that there are fees associated with adult sports leagues but they go to pay for the maintenance of the field and uniforms. And when you consider that you’re meeting others in your community who enjoy the same sport, it’s well worth the investment.  Another option is to join a group like Meetup. Meetup is an online community of specified groups that help you meet others who share your interests. This is often the best way to find others for physical activities such as hiking or Frisbee golf. Last but certainly not least is the YMCA. The YMCA offers specialized classes for all age groups, making it a great way to meet your neighbors and stay in shape.

Try Something New

Another way to become more physically active is to try something different. To demonstrate, you could take a rock-climbing class, learn line dancing at your local country western bar or try your hand at geocaching–which is where you use a GPS-enabled device to go on a digital treasure hunt. The reason it’s important to try new things is it keeps you engaged. And this often one of the hardest obstacles people face when trying to do physical activity regularly.

Tips for Helping You Stay the Course

Exercise requires a change in the routine. And at first, this can be difficult to do, so here are some tips to help you become consistent at it:

  • The CDC recommends scheduling a 30-minute block each day to account for exercise. By doing so, it can help you remain focused on the task at hand, giving you the freedom necessary to devote your time and energy to it.
  • You can also find an accountability partner. This can be a friend, relative or class. Share with them your goals, as they can help you stay on track.
  • In addition, speak with your physician about what physical activities are best for you relative to your health. Doing so will give you an idea of which exercises are right for you and which ones you should avoid.

In all, becoming more physically active will help you feel better and can help you be more connected to your community. As you make strides to be more active, now is a great time to receive a fresh perspective of your insurance policies. Contact an independent Cole Harrison agent today to learn more.
